Over two hundred people took advantage of an important opportunity to comment on the near final design for the proposed renovation of Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall. They crowded into the CitySpace meeting room overlooking the Mall to view details of the plans created by MMM Design, and to give feedback on key details of the Mall redesign.
MMM has promoted installing downtown mall bricks in sand and speaks only of lower cost and that it is the current method of choice by many installing brick pavers. MMM has apparently surveyed other municipalities installing brick. But if you visit the crosswalk at the intersection of East High Street at Fourth Street NE, and the brick sidewalk on the north side of Jackson Park you can witness in person some of the down side of installing brick and stone. Broken brick and stone and missing sand and vegetation growing between bricks are readily visible in this one area. These brick and stone installations have not been in place for very long, either.
Check out some photos I posted on my blog site and swing by the site for an up-close view of some of the maintenance issues sand installation can lead to. Visit kleemanblog.blogspot.com and see my July 5, 2008 posting. - Peter Kleeman
